Marvel to Conquer Asia with 2 New Asian Superheroes

The comic book giant Marvel braves to conquer Asia as it introduces Chinese superheroes that will soon be joining the Marvel universe.

As Marvel’s bold move to increase its Asian fanbase, the now Disney-owned franchise finally opened Marvel Stores in South Korea, released mobile games in China, and now is looking for creative and artistic talent and creators in the Philippines, according to Marvel Editor-In-Chief, C.B. Cebulski.

Furthermore, Cebulski pointed out that Marvel has been making great strides in the recent years. “We try to hire more Asian creators, writers and artists to bring a piece of their culture to Marvel comics,” he said.

Marvel also plans to introduce China-based new Chinese superheroes, Sword Master and Aero; noting that these characters will be “heavily based on Chinese culture and mythology, but set in the modern world and they will interact with the other heroes” in the Marvel universe, Cebulski said. These new additions will be drawn in manga style which is very popular in Asia.

However, Asian superheroes are still raw and rare in the Marvel universe despite the franchise growing popularity in Asia.

Marvel’s Editor-In-Chief C.B. Cebulski highlighted that in the Philippines with its deep and long history with the US, Marvel is already ingrained in the country’s rich and popular culture.

As a matter of fact, numerous Filipino illustrators have already provided art for Marvel comics since the 1970s. They are now the third largest nationality of artists employed by Marvel, just behind Americans and Italians, Mr Cebulski said.

Rurouni Kenshin Hokkaido Arc To Resume starting this September!

Earlier news had announced that Rurouni Kenshin Hokkaido Arc will have its indefinite “summer” kick off in manga magazine Jump SQ. However, with last week’s September 2017 issue, the return of Rurouni Kenshin  “Hokkaido Arc” will start in the September 4 release of Jump SQ’s October 2017 issue!

With the new illustration of Himura Kenshin,  revealing his serious expression and critical gaze as the front cover, the new arc definitely hinted an action packed story.

The manga creator, Nobuhiro Watsuki, seemed to have added new challenges and new characters in this new arc; while picking up where the The Ex-Con Ashitaro spin-off left the wandering swordsman and his crew, with the October issue, out September 4th.

Jump SQ will also be celebrating their 10th anniversary with autograph sessions in five different cities across Japan! Rurouni Kenshin’s Watsuki Nobuhiro, Blue Exorcist’s Katou Kazue, Blood Blockade Battlefront’s Nightow Yasuhiro, Platinum End’s Obata Takeshi, and The Prince of Tennis’s Konomi Takeshi will meet with fans starting in Hokkaido sometime in September. Afterward, they’ll make their way around Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Tokyo.

The spin-off’s first installment was published late last year, with the story being about a man named Ashitaro Hasegawa, an ex-con, who has recently been released from prison. Upon release, he runs into a couple that has been waiting for this day for quite some time. Since the last chapter ended, Rurouni Kenshin fans have been desperately waiting for the release of the next installment, with their wishes finally being heard.

Rurouni Kenshin’s Hokkaido Arc is set to be released in the October issue of Jump SQ summer edition, which will be available for fans to enjoy on September 4th this year. Until then, there is still time for manga fans to enjoy get up to date with the original series, as well as The Ex-Con Shitaro spin-off.

The Messed Up Psyche of A Girl in Her Lost World: A Manga Review of Boku Wa Mari No Naka

Shuzo Oshimi is probably one of the contemporary manga creators who have tried to infuse relatively unique colorful tones and unusual setup in common situations, which can be seen in most of Oshimi’s creations. One of which is his narrative styles that usually highlight weak, clumsy, and fragile yet angsty boy and girl characterization. He also presents uncommon and disconcerting  situations that, more often than not, leave the readers feeling drifted.

Shuzo Oshimi

Oshimi also likes to present themes such as coming-of-age and perversion, including his experiences from his younger days. Furthermore, his stance of presenting sexual awakening and perversion in most of his work is concrete, as he believes that perversion is a characteristic that every person possesses which is surrounded by stigma—which he wants people, including his readers, to ponder about.

Additionally, Oshimi wants to explore and exercise more his way of presenting his characters’ perspectives through his manga Boku Wa Mari No Naka (Inside Mari) where the female perspective is predominant and of course, to stress that for him girls are “half of the world”.

Boku Wa Mari No Naka was created in 2012,  the year where Oshimi was writing it simultaneously with late-stage Aku no Hana. The plot primarily contained psychosexual gender bender twists, leaning to realism more than symbolism. The first few volumes of the manga presented the story initially in a supernatural phenomenon of switching bodies, perhaps to establish curiosity and intrigue among the readers, but in the later stage of the story, the author managed to unite the idea from one point to another.

Similar to his previous work Aku no Hana, Boku Wa Mari No Naka follows a story of a subservient and good-for-nothing hikikomori, Komori Isao, the main protagonist. Komori discovers himself magically transferred into the body of a school-girl he stalks to, Mari. She’s been going to the same convenience store to buy chocolates and pops every night at 9 PM, and Komori keeps seeing her. Mari’s angelic beauty mesmerizes him deeply and when he stalks her back, he finds himself in her consciousness the following day.

However, Mari-Isao also discovers that Mari did not transfer into Isao’s body, but went all gone. The original hikikomori, Isao Komori (who is completely unaware of the existence of his new counterpart) met Mari through sudden confrontations: in the convenience store and in Komori’s apartment.

Mari’s classmate, Yuki, is the first to notice and discover Mari’s ordeal. Yuki belongs in the lowest social tier, while Mari hails as the leader of the top group in their class. Yuki helped Mari-Isao find real Mari by allowing Mari-Isao navigate real Mari’s past relationships while maintaining her social ties.

Oshimi is probably one of the most commendable manga artists of today. The sudden shift of his drawing style depending on the characters’ emotion/mood is surprisingly remarkable. Although there were lapses in uniting one point of the story to another, Oshimi’s way of delivering the story through his drawings managed to keep the manga in one piece. The amount of time and effort given in the creation of this manga surely emanated in each panel, hence making this manga a great creation despite the flaws in the storyline.

Oshimi was probably trying to explore his talent as a storyteller by creating a manga with a ‘female perspective’. This because most of his characters in this manga are females more than males, allowing him to spend more time presenting more realistic situations about how women truly interact and deal with their everyday life’s troubles. The parts where these situations were delivered were so real that, as a reader, I wondered how Oshimi managed to include these parts in the manga so flawlessly, at some point. Although his representations were graphic in some degree, however, the story itself made these scenes valid and essential–leaving these parts out of the manga would make the story dull and pointless.

The transition of the ordeal (initially masked as a supernatural phenomenon  which then led to the revelation of the character’s psychological disorder) gradually progressed, however, there were some blurred points as well as parts that I deemed somewhat missing in the story.

This manga, if recreated as a live-action film, would perhaps and hopefully come out similar to 1999 film “Fight Club” (or probably surpass it even. Is Fight Club one of Oshimi’s film influences?) due to its mature scenes and content.

Comments from the readers basically littered forums with “some reasons” behind the story’s loose parts. Some say Oshimi ended the story that way as he didn’t know where to take it next. Also, somebody asked on his Twitter if he had any plans to continue and he said no.

Some readers also consider Boku Wa Mari No Naka as NTR (Or Netorare) — a fetish derived around the main characters primary love interest being stolen from them by someone else through sexual means. Often without them initially knowing until the very end.

I give Boku Wa Mari No Naka a 7 out of 10. I only recommend this manga to those MATURE readers.

3 Must-Watch Drama Adaptations of Popular Ding Mo Novels You Shouldn’t Want to Miss

With years of being fond of anything Asian, I haven’t heard of Ding Mo before, until mid-2016.

My first encounter with Ding Mo began when my fondness over a drama (which was based on one of her best-selling novels) grew. I thought the drama was cool, so I had a quick research online about the drama and there I also learned that she already wrote a lot of HE novels (Happy Ending =HE. thanks to 书声Bar!) which include When a Snail Loves 如果蜗牛有爱情.

I thought Ding Mo was a guy at first, as most of her well-known novels were either criminal, psychological, or detective in genre. I failed to even bother checking out her name if it’s for a guy or girl as I was too focused on her novels, not to mention I’m not Chinese in entirety (1/4 Chinese 1/4 Spanish, 2/4 Filipino).

To tell you honestly, it wasn’t that hard to like her novels (maybe because these kinds of genres pique my interest the most). It wasn’t long until I finally read two of her novels and discovered that she’s actually a woman. 🙂

Most of the drama versions that I’ve seen were under these genres and interestingly, the romantic plots in the dramas were either as endearing or as daring as the novel versions–except for one, so far.

So with all the fondness I have for her works, including the drama versions, here I am sharing 3 Ding Mo novels-turned-dramas which all couch potatoes can binge watching on. 🙂

# 1 Love Me if You Dare (AKA When He Comes, Close Your Eyes; Close Your Eyes, Stay Close to Me)
Mandarin: 他来了,请闭眼
First episode date: October 2015
Final episode date: 4 January 2016
Episodes: 24

Love Me if You Dare is about an *anti-social* but brilliant criminal psychologist Simon Bo, played by Wallace Huo, who can analyze violent and mysterious behavior. Aside from being a criminal psychologist, Simon Bo is also a professor at The University of Maryland and works as an analyst as well as an advisor on the police department’s most violent or difficult cases.

Sandra Ma played as Jenny Jian, a young assistant who helps Simon in analyzing and delving into the thoughts and intentions of a criminal mind. Jenny helps Simon open up emotionally as they work together to solve crimes.

So, I watched this drama because it was a suggestion on a drama website I used to visit before. Although I have to admit, it is also BECAUSE of Sandra Ma’s beauty that made me watch the entire first episode, staring intently at her, then BAM. I saw Wallace Huo. 🙂 So then, I finally managed to finish the whole run, not just because of Sandra’s beautiful face, but also because of Wallace Huo. 😀

“Love Me, If You Dare” is a 2015 Chinese drama series directed by Zhang Kai Zhou. It is based on the novel Close Your Eyes, Stay Close to Me by Ding Mo.

# 2 When a Snail Falls In Love (AKA When A Snail Loves)
Mandarin: 如果蜗牛有爱情
First episode date: 24 October 2016
Final episode date: 12 December 2016
Episodes: 21

Wang Kai starred in this drama as Ji Bai, a well known police detective who excels in his field as an in-charge of the Violent Crimes Unit while Wang Zi Wen played as an intern criminal profiler Xu Xu. And as Ji Bai’s case partner, Xuxu discovered that both of them have their own takes in solving crimes, but eventually, with their odd looking partnership, they managed to get the whole job done with an unbeatable track record for solving crimes. When Ji Bai found himself falling in love with Xuxu through their close working relationship, Xuxu is quite slow in learning (and returning, for that matter!) about his feelings.

What I like about this drama is, of course, Wang Kai (haha!). I’ve seen him play in Love Me if You Dare, but I like him better in this drama. When A Snail Falls In Love allowed Wang Kai to showcase his acting prowess and there were scenes that will knock your feet off. Talk about the stares and subtle opportunities!

“When a Snail Falls in Love” is a 2016 Chinese drama series directed by Zhang Kai Zhou. It is based on the novel Ru Guo Wo Niu You Ai Qing by Ding Mo.

# 3 Memory Lost
Mandarin: 美人为馅
Number of Seasons: 3 (Season 1: October 24, 2016, Season 2: November 14, 2016, Season 3: December 12, 2016)
Final episode date: 12 December 2016
Episodes: 36

This drama adaptation of Ding Mo’s novel, Memory Lost is about Han Chen, played by Bai Yu, who suffers from amnesia and struggles to find his lost fiancée – a woman who does not exist according to people around him.

In a small town, he meets a female detective Bai Jingxi, played by Yang Rong, a girl full of personality. Bai Jingxi is struggling to discover her mysterious past, a past of a blank background for the last five years.  As both were entangled in complicated murder cases and faces near-death situations, they slowly uncover the secrets to their lost memories.

This drama was released as a web series on iQiyi on the same date as When A Snail Falls In Love’s.

With all honesty, I’ve already read the novel before watching this drama. I was quite disappointed in a certain degree as the drama did not follow the novel quite clearly enough. The characters from the novel were tough and some scenarios in the novel contain witty comebacks from both leads. I guess this drama made a few adjustments, to give favor to those who want a milder take on the novel *fan service*.

# 4 Our Glamorous Time

Airing TBA
Story Synopsis:

Lin Qian (will be played by Zhao Li Ying), once thought the man she wanted would be handsome and formidable, able to “create clouds with one turn of the hand and rain with another turn” in the business world, causing her to look up to him in admiration. There would be nothing he could not accomplish.

But when she finally met the one that fit this (will be played by Jin Han), she realized how much she liked his impassiveness, his quietness, his persistence, and his loyalty. She liked him to the point that she was willing to be with him, to stand side by side with him in this callous business world that is full of bloodshed. To be reckless in these years of our life, irrespective of the future.

Time 2.jpg

My take: This upcoming drama is so controversial that I feel sorry for Jerry Yan. But anyhoo, I shall see this drama once it’s out so for now I might read the novel first. 🙂

Whew. This is quite a long run down. I hope that many would try seeing at least one of these drama adaptations, as I see all these so worthy to watch. 😉
